Hello from Hanna:
"During a company meeting all of the employees at ZP got to vote on our 3 most important goals. As all of us employees got to choose what goals are important to each of us, we are all motivated to keep working toward those goals.
This "branch" of ZP is working with extra focus on goal 2, 13 and 14. Of course ZP covers several other goals as well, but in FishTag we have a better opportunity at improving life below water rather than on land. This is not because life on land is of less improtance, but our project is aimed at fish (...and they do not thrive on land). "
ZP has other projects that covers other goals in a great way, but in this blog we will focus on what our aquaculture-branch is working towards.
2. Zero world hunger
Our non-implantable sensor (TAS-sensor) measures antioxidants. Depending on type of antioxidant(s) measured, one can get neutrition levels. It can also detect levels of stress: it does so by mesuring biproducts of the oxidative stress-reaction.
By monitoring the fishes' nutritional values, the fish farmers can adjust the feed and thus get better fed and more healthy fish. A school of properly fed and healthy fish will provide more and better food. A happy fish will provide meat of better quality, and no fish deserve to suffer unnecessary if it can be adjusted for.
The FishTag aims to do the same: regulate and provide the school with what is needed to optimize for the fishes' health and thus food production.
13. Climate action
All production leave a CO2-footprint. We aim to make ours as small as possible. When deciding on materials, we always go for the least hazardous, both for the fishes sake and ours.
When the FishTag and TAS-sensor is in use, we aim to reduce the amount of consumed feed and antibiotics. We aim to help the farmers make educated choises based on the data provided by our health monitoring system. If the amount of feed is adjusted to what's necessary, rather than what you'd think be enough one can save both feed, fish and amount of antibiotics. When one use less feed and/or antibiotics, the footprint of their production will not be added to yours, and you're making an effort to do reduce losses. This also let us help the fish farmers meet goal 12: Responsible consumption and production.
14. Life below water
Happiness and health goes hand in hand, also when it comes to fish. We aim to make it possible to have fish so happy and healthy that their health is what will keep their production costs low. Humans and fishes have such different languages that the safest and easiest way to monitor their health is to measure biomarkers. To measure biomarkers in addition to knowing the fish will greatly reduce the risk of human error. The farmer will also have data to rely on if they're in doubt about what to do next.
We at ZP aim to do the best we can, always and in every field. We want the fish to have a life as good as possible before it is considered food.
Until next time,
Hanna T. Bråthen,
Engineer at ZP
